Drumballyroney
« on: Friday 07 December 18 21:17 GMT (UK) »
I have finally found a Scottish 1855 birth certificate that identifies one couple from my tree as being from Drumballyroney Parish Co Down and for the wife specifies Lisnisk townland.  They were married in 1844 according to their son's birth certificate.  Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to look next?

Did they marry in Ireland?

if so, this might help:

According to their son's birth certificate they married in Ireland in 1844.

That link should tell you the availability of parish records for the different denominations. - Then look for the marriage, if the parish register is available.

You could also get a general feeling for the people's surnames in the area by searching Griffith's valuation for Down (mid 1860's I think) and the Tithe Applotment Lists (about 1834 or so?).

1844 is before any marriages were recorded in the statutory registers. So to trace the marriage, we need to know what denomination it was. (Tradition was to marry in the bride's church, so what was her denomination, if you know?).

This map shows the boundaries for Lisnisk townland- east of Rathfriland-

The registration district is Banbridge (which you'll need to know if you start searching for vital records here)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If the parish registers are available, don't forget to look for baptisms of their older children. The son you mention wasn't born until 10 years after the marriage.
-- That is, unless you know for sure that they went immediately to Scotland after marrying.

I have no idea when they arrived in Scotland.  There were 5 previous children according to the 1855 birth certificate.
