I've had quick look through the burials, marriages and baptisms til the 1780s and couldn't see any mentions of Samuel. However, quite a few records are badly faded and some pages are missing bits so it's possible I've missed him.

The only other Butchers I saw were baptisms of children of a John and Mary Butcher, in the 1740s.

If you find any other transcriptions you want checked just let us know.

I guess if no other records of Samuel cannot be found in Great Braxted, They have either been lost or he moved.

I did a quick google search and I see Great Braxted and Bradfield Combust  are about 30-35 miles in distance. I am not an Historian so whether it would have been common for people to have migrated that distance in the 18th century I don't  know. Nor am I familiar with that part of England.

Out of interest does a marriage record of Thomas and Elizabeth exist, and if so, is a maiden name listed for her?

Cheers

Another quick question,

In a case of a child that was orphaned. What would the standard practice of the time, been in raising that child?

There does not appear to be any other Butcher's in the parish at the time.

I couldn't see a marriage for Thomas & Elizabeth in Great Braxted but as the register is in poor condition in many places many records are difficult or impossible to read.

There was a marriage for a Thomas Butcher and Mary Bonner. Whether or not this is the same Thomas, or a relation, is difficult to say. I couldn't see a burial for Mary.

Marriage
married: 24 Sep 1693; All Saints, Great Braxted
groom: Thomas Butcher; of B__ Wickham
bride: Mary Bonner; otp

I couldn't quite make out this Thomas' abode but it could be Wickham Bishops which is nearby.

I don't know if it's the right couple, but just in case
Thomas Butcher + Elizabeth Matthews, marriage in 1714, Finchingfield

That's from Boyd's, a free search on findmypast. It's the nearest Thomas Butcher - Elizabeth marriage in Essex, date wise, to the events in Gt Braxted.

Except that the marriage is not on FreeReg?
There was a marriage licence
http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.aspx?ThisRecordsOffSet=38&id=1114706

And we can see the allegation on FamilySearch
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-YS26-799?i=336&cat=279884

Thomas + Elizabeth said to be both of Topsfield
Which must be Toppesfield.

FreeReg has baptisms in Toppesfield from 1714/15, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Butcher, up to 1721, Elizabeth (number 2?), daughter of Thomas + Elizabeth Butcher.
What they may not have is a burial of a Thomas Butcher in Toppesfield.
Could the family have wound up in Great Braxted?

Note, on FreeReg, a marriage of Robert Butcher + Mary Matthew in Toppesfield, also in 1714.
