Thornaby baptisms - which church?
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 19:27 GMT (UK) »
Is there any way of knowing whether a baptism recorded as being in Thornaby parish was performed at St Peter's in the old village or St Paul's further up river? We're talking between the very late 1850s to mid 1870s.
Ancestral names: Lewis, Watson, Hetherington, Barclay, Clark, Regan, Hunter, Murray, Robson, Todd, Carney, Comerford, Urwin, Rayson, White, Purves, Biggins, Wilson, Gibson, Graham, Curry, Kennedy, Greenlaw, Waldie, Armstrong, Hodgson, Harle, Wild, Monkhouse, Donald, Allen, Bowie, Cowe, Ogilvie, Barnes, Pattinson, Williamson, Hogg, Denholm, Kirkwood and Hewitt

Perhaps you could give us an example, so that we can look for ourselves as to which parish was used  :-\

Okay. One of the kids of the particular family I'm looking at is Sarah Ann Swinney, parents Nicholas and Sarah Ann (nee Ramshaw). Ancestry record says baptised 31 Jan 1860 at Thornaby on Tees. I know Thornaby on Tees wasn't formed until the 1890s though when the old Thornaby village merged with the urbanised South Stockton.

So we're looking at Sarah Ann Swiney, baptised 31 January 1860 = Thornaby, St Paul.

If there was a thumbs-up smiley, I'd use it right now. Thanks again. Would it be safe to assume the next few kids were at St Paul's too as they're all listed the same way on Ancestry?

Did/does St Paul's have a graveyard? One of the kids, Nicholas, died in 1864.

NBI says that Nicholas is buried at St Paul - 8 November 1864, aged 2.  Parish register images just state "Parish of Thornaby" on the

Hi Silverhawk

Nicholas Mushens Swinney and Sarah Ann Ramshaw are my 3 x ggrandparents, via their daughter Margaret Jane. It's too late (or rather early morning :o) but I will pm you tomorrow evening.
I am a bit busy today organising my dad's 90th birthday :D

How are you related to them?
