Peter White marriage
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to tidy up my Scottish ancestry, and I am hoping someone can find this marriage. Peter White and Margaret Wilson had 3 children baptised 1806/08/11, two in Spott and one in Innerwick, but I can't find the marriage.
I have little experience of Scottish records and have only checked free sites, except FindMyPast.
   Thank you

The only source of original records is Scotlands People. It is free to register there and view search results. You have to buy units to view the images.

I cannot see the marriage on there unfortunately. Often happens that you can find some of the births and christenings, but fail to find the banns or marriage entry. Only about a third of BMD events were registered in the Old Parish Registers at that time. This all changed of course with the introduction of official registration in Scotland from 1855.

Could this be another child for Peter and wife Margaret?

Thank you - at least Scottish baptism records give the mother's maiden name. It looks as if that is as far as I go with any certainty.

If a couple married irregularly, as often happened in Scotland at this time, their marriage record is less likely to be recorded in the parish registers, and more likely to be noted in the kirk session minutes. This would record the telling off that they got from the kirk session. These kirk session records are unindexed and held in the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh. Though there are plans to make them publicly accessible online. There are limited repositories with digital access now.

Thanks Trish, they look like the right people in the right places.
   Interesting information about irregular marriage.
