Burial Salford - Joseph Stansfield d 7th January 1946
« on: Sunday 09 December 18 07:59 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the burial / grave of my grandfather Joseph Stansfield who died 7th January 1946 at his home 33, Wynford St, Salford.
I expected that he'd have been buried in Weaste Cemetery so I've already contacted Agecroft Cemetery who have explored the records of all 4 Salford cemeteries but found no information on the name or the date.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Yvonne

Are there any instructions or notes in his will?

It looks as though his wife died in the Isle of Man. Was she buried there?

There are no specific instructions as to his burial in his will only that his debts and funeral expenses should be paid.
Yes his wife, Sarah, died in the Isle of Man on 13th June 1946. There was an inquest held the next day. I do not know where she is buried. Agecroft Cemeteries did a search for her grave when they searched for Joseph. But found nothing.
I wonder if there were any mention of funeral arrangements in an obituary.
Thanks for your interest. Yvonne

That was going to be my next suggestion.

There are some sites with newspaper access but I can’t see an announcement.
I can see a snippet re daughter Joyce’s 21st in 1943 so you would imagine that there would be death announcements and these usually gave funeral arrangements.

You could try  Manchester Archives re Manchester Evening News old editions.

Hi Cloud.
What religion was your grandfather?.
Some of my relations lived within walking distance of Weaste Cemetery Salford, but being Roman Catholics I found  on their passing that they were buried at St Josephs Catholic  Cemetery at Moston Manchester.
Regards Dave.

Hi Dave,
The family is Church of England so I hope they haven't gone too far from Salford. They had a plot in Weaste Cemetery but by 1946 there was only one space left so I assumed that they had bought another plot so Joseph and his wife Sarah, when she died, could be buried together. However Sarah died 6 month later while on holiday in the in Isle of Man with her daughter Joyce. I don't know if the family brought her body home.
I've searched on British Newspaper Archive web site but their records for the Manchester Evening News stop at 1945. So it seems that as Heywood kindly suggested I'll have to request a search by Manchester Archives.
Thanks all for your interest and helpful suggestions.
Best wishes, Yvonne

Hi All,
Just to let you know that I contacted Manchester Crematorium and found out that Joseph and his wife Sarah had been cremated. Their ashes have been scattered in the Old Garden. They kindly emailed me a copy of their entry in the Remembrance Book and a photo of the memorial plaque. Wonderful. Just to let you all know not to forget the crematorium when looking for deaths.
Best wishes, Yvonne
