Maud Drake-Mcnuff
« on: Sunday 09 December 18 12:58 GMT (UK) »
After researching into my 2nd great grandmother, Maude Drake, I discovered how she emigrated to Canada leaving my great grandfather (her son) in England at the age of 3 with his father John Begley.

Maud Drake and John William Begley married 09/07/1916 in Bootle, Liverpool.
Their only son, John William Begley was born 17/04/1917 in Liverpool.

After futher research, it was found that Maud actually emigrated to Canada with her uncle Robert McNuff (mother's brother). They then had 2 daughters.

I have since been in contact with cousins over in America, this has helped me to understand a lot more, however there are so many more unanswered questions.

I can't find any divorce records for Maud and John. They both later went on to "marry" however I cannot locate new marriage certificates for the remarried. I wonder whether they actually got divorced.

Does anyone also have any ideas as to why she emigrated? Considering Maud and John had only been married when she left in 1920.

Thanks

Did Maud and John come to the US and when?  Did the supposed 2nd marriages happen in the US and, if so, any idea where?  Do you have Maud & John's date and place of birth?

Any further details, as long as they are not personal details about still living people, would be helpful.

Maud and her uncle Robert emigrated to Canada 23rd June 1920 by the ship Haverford. She travelled with her married name "Maud Begley". However, her husband John Begley and son John Begley Jr stayed in Liverpool.
Maud and Robert were living in Quebec and from then on she took on Robert's name McNuff (which was also her mother's maiden name). Maud and Robert had a daughter Irene McNuff and all three are named in a 1921 Canadian Census. So Maud and Robert must have married around then.
So in 1920, Maud was calling herself Maud Begley and in 1921, Maud McNuff.
Robert and Maud then had another daughter, Mona in 1922 in Quebec. The family soon moved to USA.

My initial thoughts are that Maud never divorced John Begley back in Liverpool?

Robert's first marriage c1925 and Maud's c1916

Maud's information is correct, so Robert's probably is also. Meaning you are looking for a marriage in New York or New Jersey about 1925. Since New York's seem to be online at familysearch and they didn't turn up in a quick search, they might have been married in NJ.
Whether or not New Jersey will provide a copy of the record to you or not, I don't know. Googling "New Jersey Marriage certificates" will probably find their site which should tell you.

Or less likely, in Pennsylvania, which isn't that far away.

There is also a border crossing for Maud & Robert earlier in 1923 (April). They are going to Robert's brother, Arthur, in New York.
