As per the Beds FHS Surnames Index CD, Ruth Edwards Ryland married in 1851 in 'Biggleswade District', as did William Mumford. This is not the Biggleswade anglican parish nor is it any other anglican parish that is within the Biggleswade Registration District. Suggests to me that it was either in the registry office or at a non-conformist church.

The detail will be found on the Biggleswade parish records CD that is available to purchase from Beds Family History Society.

Regards John

Thanks Keyboard and John P .
I had found that connection via the 1861 Census for William and his family, as Elizabeth Mary Mumford (niece) is staying with them. She is aged 9 and her parents are James and Elizabeth Mumford - William is a lace merchant also like James. John Mumford who is married to Christiana is a conundrum.
Christiana is nee Philpott. Oral family history told me when I was a child we had a connection to Toby Philpott jugs (ha ha). So it now makes sense.

Keyboard:
I agree that St Alban church, Wood street, Cheapside for William would be a strong connection, as John Mumford's business was in Wood street.
Have you got William's dob ?  William always gives his DOB as 1824 on census ?

Mumford - London. Jones & Evans - Llanbeblig Caernarvon.

:-\ Something odd with 1824, as his baptism from Wood Street abode 88? Wood Street was 10th November 1816 Father John occ Lace Merchant Mother Christiana.

PS James baptism had address Goldsmith Street, so did Ann Maria 20th May 1821 and Henry 14th May 1823 Father John occ Lace Merchant Mother Christiana

Keyboard :'( And I thought I had it cracked !
I need to see the marriage cert of William and Ruth to confirm John (?) as his father. I think it is a civil registration. I shall have to go my local library tomorrow and do a look up though their Ancestry /Findmypast subscription.

Starting to think William could be a nephew or later child (named William after deceased first William) to a different mother/wife or just someone who changed his dob ? Clutching at straws - its becoming a Scandie crime drama >:(

Hi if as others believe the marriage of William to Ruth was a Civil Service, you will not find anything online?

The BFHS Biggleswade CD contains a list of marriages from 1837 to 1885 but it's not transcribed from church records and simply lists the groom, bride and date. It's compiled from various sources including FreeBMD and IGI and covers St Andrew, Baptist and Wesleyan. It doesn't include Ruth and William's marriage.

The CD contains various transcriptions and records but I can't find any Rylands, other than as marriages witnesses. Not even in the Old Meeting birth records, for 1762 to 1837. Various newspaper items suggest the family had a strong connection to the church.

And there's various other records for John Mumford at Milk Street. Seems too much of a coincidence.
