Although a marriage can't be found for her parents, is it possible the surname Redwood comes down from her maternal line?

Where was her mother born & who were her parents, have you managed to go back i.e. to find a possible link with a name which isn't a 'Scottish' name?
Of course the name could equally be the fathers' line?
Where was James born & have you traced his parentage?

It's a strange scenario for sure but I can't help wondering if James Samuel wasn't the father then why would he attend the baptism with his 'wife'?

Is it possible her mother died soon after her birth?

I see Elisabeth Sammul is with her mother Elisabeth Anderson in 1851!

My opinion is leaning towards adulterous meaning of the word Uncleaness
Elizabeth would have been conceived in November 1847 and the first record of banns for James and Mary was 18 Dec 1847 is that the same couple in Edinburgh banns being read on 2 Jan 1848
A wife in every port comes to mind would be interesting reading the Kirk records if there's any

Also have you looked at the wording on the other baptisms any other illegitimate is uncleaness used on any others

@ Guy, when folk refer to the Church of England we all know know what they mean, the Church of Scotland ditto. There are several other Presbyterian flavours plus the Congregationalists, Baptists etc, etc. None can be described as "The Kirk!"  The Piskies (Episcopalians) are also not the Church of Scotland! Indeed, the latter was proscribed & only had the penal laws against it lifted in 1792.  ;D

You might but that was certainly not the views of members of the Episcopal church where I was born & grew up in Scotland. There they were certain that the Episcopal church of Scotland was the true Church of Scotland despite the persecution by James VI in 1584, the Episcopal church can trace its roots back before the Black Acts. Some even claimed the roots of the Episcopal church were founded in the religion brought to Scotland in the local church founded by Saint Columba, though I was never convinced with that argument even though Columba did found the village church.

Everybody entertains fantasies Guy. This Scottish Episcopal Church was moribund in the 19th century & only saved from extinction by Irish & English emigration. More accurately the Anglican Church in Scotland, one of my grannies was a Piskie but apparently dropped that along with her Brummie accent!  :D  Not called the "English Church" for nothing! That's who went to it. "Celtic Heritage" indeed!
