I think he is the son of Francis (rather than Thomas) and Sarah

Did you know that Edward had a very lucky escape in 1845?
Dreadful Shipwreck, with Melancholy Loss of Life
(Essex newspapers)

December 1845 the Mercury, laden with coals, left Shields, bound for Colchester
Hit a storm and wrecked near Whitby
The master, Thomas Douglas Nunn, and two men drowned
Six survivors, including Edward Syrett of Colchester.
