Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers

I have just discovered that my stepdad's grandfather Andrew LINDSAY (b. 1887 Co. Tyrone, 1952 Western Australia) served in the Royal Inniskilling Fuslliers, including during WWI and for 5 years after the war in India (from his obituary). How do I go about finding out more about his service please?

Service records for anyone serving after 1920 are still with the MOD, and are not available online.

Joined up at 17 - say 1904/5 - served throughout the war and 5 years afterwards, as you say. 

Looking at the possibilities in medal records, the only one that seems likely is 8052 Private Andrew Lindsay, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Disembarked 23 August 1914 and still serving at the end of the war.

The service number 8052 would be right for 1904/5.

He's in the database of pre-1920 soldiers that can be researched by the The Inniskillings Museum in conjunction with History Hub Ulster. How much additional information they might have, I can't say:

I have been searching the listings of soldiers born before 1901 whose records are still held by MoD and I'm not seeing an A Lindsay born in 1887. But there is one born in 1886 (1920's service number 3299505). It's possible that he lied about his age.  Was his birth date 8 February?

Thanks Shaun, sorry I should have said c1887 as I haven't found his birth. He was 24 in the 1911 census (Drumclamph, Magheracreggan, Tyrone as LINSEY). On his marriage certificate - 1909, Ardstraw, Strabane - his father was John LINDSAY, butcher.

He came to Australia in 1925 with his wife and children (ship 'Hobsons Bay').

I see that he's a blacksmith in the 1911 census, not a soldier.
