And he was a blacksmith on the 1909 marriage register, which shows his father John as a blacksmith too, not a butcher.

Yes I saw that in the census - he is shown as a soldier on the immigration passenger list:

Thank you for the link with the marriage - I had that, no idea how I came to write butcher in my notes!!!

I've just noticed I also have his youngest son's birth certificate - Oct 1914, Castlederg - and father's occupation is shown as gamekeeper, Private, 2nd Batt, Inniskilling Fusiliers. They are written one above the other. I'm assuming gamekeeper might be his non-military job?? Bit of a change from smithy?
