1707 Latin burial extracts 10 and 11

Good afternoon,

two transcriptions from a 1707 burial register;

Gulielmus Jowet ? (of/from) Dewsbury April 16.

and

Thomas Ayre (of/from) Howley ? (of/from) Batley 23rd day of June.

What you're seeing here is an abbreviation of the Latin 'parochia' - 'in the parish'.

The first character is a symbol used to represent 'par'. Sometimes it looks more like a 'p' but with the stem looped round and crossed through, but this one is rather like a long 's'. The first entry then omits the 'oc', the second one just the 'o'.

There is apparently a Howley in Batley - there's a mention of Howley Hall on this page:

These Latin abbreviations are becoming a pain, some are changing between entries.

Correct, Howley Hall is in the Parish of Batley.  I don't think there is, or was a place called Howley, but I might be wrong?

Maybe I was assuming too much, though as well as Howley Hall, the maps below show Howley Park in the same area. So maybe the area round about took its name from the hall?

The first map (near the top edge, more or less in the middle) shows the location of the old hall (remains of). The second one is the sheet immediately to the north, with a few more places with Howley in their names.
