Dryden marriage
« on: Monday 10 December 18 12:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I am looking for a marriage between Jane Dryden B.1832 Berwick On Tweed and James Waters b. 1832 Berwick. In the 1861 census they are married. Their first child was born about 1857 in Tweedmouth
Any help appreciated
Merry Christmas Heather

Can't help with the marriage (nothing in FreeBMD and nothing likely on Scotlands People) .
I checked the old newspapers and haven't spotted any marriage announcement.

But, on the offchance that your James was a plasterer I did see this in the newspaper which may be of interest, though if he wasn't a plasterer, you can safely ignore it :-)

The Berwick Journal
20 Nov 1858
page 4, col 4

BERWICK PETTY SESSIONS, THURSDAY
[ ..]
A case was hear from Tweedmouth of a family quarrel, brought forward at the instance of the police, wherein a man of the name of James Waters, plasterer, was represented to have quarrelled with his wife, and her father and brother, who reside in apartments beneath those occupied by the parties referred to, hearing the quarrel proceeded to their house where the father felled the husband with the poker. The wife refused to prefer a complaint and eventually the entire party were discharged.

Where were they in 1861?

and what was the name of the child born 1857, Tweedmouth?

I've checked the GRO index and there's no Waters child MMN Dryden 1857 +/- 2 years.

No Waters child registered in Berwick for that time frame showing in Scotland's People either.

In 1861 the surname is spelt Watters. Their first child was Mary. I found a Mary bap. 1853 parents James Walters and Jane. Then another Mary bap. 1857.The newspaper article did relate to my James and Jane.
Thanks

ah ok, they were in Chester le Street in 1861.

GRO births has Mary Watters, MMN Dryden, Q3 1853, Berwick upon Tweed
and a likely death reg Q1 1854, age 0 Berwick upon Tweed

And Mary Watters, MMN Dryden Q3 1857, Berwick upon Tweed looks to be Mary mark2

Doesn't help with the marriage, sorry but makes more sense to me now.

Pleased it was the right James in the newspaper.

They could have married if for instance they married over the border -  civil registration didn't start in Scotland till 1855, not sure that all parish registers are included in Scotland's People.
Or it could have been an irregular marriage.

Many thanks
