Joseph Wallet /Wollett and Maria Ward married Walsall 1818
« on: Monday 10 December 18 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm struggling to find the couple on the 1851 census
Joseph was born c 1800 a coal miner in Tipton on the 1841 Greets Green with wife Moriah age 45 .

They married at Walsall  in 1818 and had a first child Elizabeth in Bloxwich 1818 ,Mary Anne Bilston 1821,Eliza 1824 Tipton,Joseph 1827 Tipton and on the 1841 census a daughter Ann Maria age 3 born c 1838.

I've found what looks like Maria/Ann Maria /Moriah in West Bromwich in 1861 widow born 1788 Shropshire. The children all except Eliza and  Ann Maria I can see on the 1851 census.
Joseph is buried at Christ Church in 1861.

What I want to know is where Joseph was born and parents for both.

Joseph is not the one born 1795 at Walsall(he marries an Elizabeth and takes over the Bulls Head Rushall St c 1839).

So any ideas for the 1851 census ?

Any help much appreciated

Have you tried looking for Cadwallader, which appears to be interchangeable with Wallett/Wollett?

I also have links with the Wallett/Cadwallader family in the Bilston area.  Starting with Procula Wallett - they have some great names - Aris, Aquilla ……………………….

Joseph is buried at Christ Church in 1861.

Is this Joseph jnr or senior?

If senior - what age was he?

Have you traced that one back to 1851 as she would have been 50yrs old in 1838

Does the 1841 show your Maria as born or not born in county?

Hello
Thanks for your replies
The 1841 census gives births in Staffordshire for all the family.
The burial in 1861 at Christ Church West Bromwich is for Joseph senior age 61 ,there is also one for his son Joseph and daughter in law Jane 1856 and 1866 so it does look like the family moved to the Lyng area of West Bromwich.
I can't find either Joseph or Maria in 1851  to get their birthplaces and the entry for Maria in 1861 just gives Shropshire and birth 1788 which is older ,but she is living next to Joseph junior's widow and children which suggests she is the right one.
I've tried looking for her but nothing.

The Cadwallader/Wollett thing for Bilston I didn't know about.
There is a similar thing going on with Cadwalladers and Wollett at Atcham Shrewsbury. They are described as of Atcham Grange  Thomas and Elizabeth married c 1728 and his father Morris.

I'll take a closer look at Bilston. Thank you!
In the meantime if you do spot the 1851 entries  for them.It would be terrific.

Hi

I've now found them on the 1851 as Walliss in West Bromwich
Joseph Wallis 54 miner  Shropshire Nk
Maria 40 Madeley Shropshire
John 22 coal miner West Bromwich
Ann Maria 12
Rossannah 4

Which gives me more headaches.
Son John is indeed marrying as Cadwallader in 1852 West Bromwich and then appears as Wallett and Cadwalladr on the censuses.
Wife Maria surely can't be 62 when she had Rosannah and aged 57 if I go with a birth of 1790 is pushing it but she says 40 and a birth of 1811 which makes her too young for the marriage in Walsall in 1818.
So are there two wives called Maria? Or are there only one? I can't find a birth registration for the children born  after 1837 which would give a maiden name.
If I had that maybe I could find a second marriage perhaps even fathers for both of them?

ps just seen that 1818 marriage isn't correct so

Joseph Wollatt/Wallis/Cadwallader born 1796-1800
married a Ann Maria/Maria c 1818 who was born 1788-1810 in Madeley

Any ideas pleeeaaaase

There's a baptism at Tipton, 8 July 1838, Ann Maria, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Cadwallader.

Well, now you really are in my territory! :-)  I have Wallett/Cadwallader/Powis from Madeley/Dawley Bank.

That definitely looks like a second wife on the 1851 or wife, son and grandchildren.

Hi
Yes Gill definitely in your territory. Not got any Josephs have you ?
That baptism for Ann Maria Cadwallader from Jon does make me wonder if Rosannah is her daughter too.But there is a daughter Elizabeth d of Elizabeth bapt 28.3.1847 at Christ church West Brom .
Thank you Jon for that baptism ,more things to look at.
