John NODDER was born in 1838 to Thomas (shoemaker, later Postmaster) and Maria in Torpoint. He appears in both the 1841 and 1851 Census transcripts for Torpoint, but he is not there in 1861. He joined the Royal Navy in 1854, becoming carpenter/shipwright, so I suspect he was on a ship somewhere in 1861. I know that crews of ships at sea at the time of the census were enumerated so it should be possible to find some record for him in 1861, but I have so far failed.

Can anyone check the 1861 census naval record and see if John is included there and, if so, what ship he was on. I have until now believed he spent most of his naval career merely maintaining/repairing ships in port at Devonport, so if I could find evidence that he was on the high seas, at least for part of his career, that would be very exciting.

Can anyone make my Christmas?

Thanks

I am sure that someone will correct me but I think that it is only the 1901 & 1911 census that have overseas military on them.

There are also lots of missing census pieces for the 1861 census

Hi Rosie,

So swift!  Many many thanks.   Where do I use "RG09/4438 f142 p8" to find the detials, and where the Centur was. Apologies for ignorance. I don't have subscriptions to any genealogy resources or similar. Can you e.g. post a screenshot?

It does not show where the Centaur was located.  The reference I gave can be used on both Ancestry & FindMyPast by selecting the 1861 census search.  The record I found is on familysearch but no image is available.

From 1861 the Royal Navy were issued with special naval schedules, both in home waters and abroad.

According to a report in the Liverpool Daily Post - Saturday 27 April 1861 H.M. steam sloop Centaur was in China.
From the Aberdeen Herald and General Advertiser - Saturday 15 June 1861
Thus the Tae-ping authorities at Nantong agreed to permit the “Centaur” to be stationed at Nanking for the specified purpose of ensuring the navigation the river to vessels engaged in trade,

Thank you for clarifying that Stan.  Did that apply to the other forces too
