The 1911 Census was the first one to have a full enumeration carried out of the British Army serving overseas, including details of wives and families. In earlier censuses the military authorities only provided the Census Office  with the numbers of officers, other ranks, wives and children, either by place or by regiment. Those serving at home have always been enumerated.

Thanks so much Stan. This sort of information is so hard to find yet is so important to add colour to the genealogists usual story of births, marriages and burials. My family are going to be so excited when they see what I - and you  - have found.
