John Bulmer of Sherburn
« on: Monday 10 December 18 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to look for baptisms, marriages and burials for Sherburn. My ancestor John Bulmer was a farmer there and his two sons John born abt 1702 and William born abt 1704 both married and settled in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
I have tried ancestry and FindMyPast but don't know the area well enough to know where to look.

Many thanks

If you click on the above website and go on to the Tyne and Wear Archives User Guides then into the parish registers (page 25) there are records shown as available for 'Sherburn Hospital'.

Sherburn was in the Parish of Pittington until 1872. http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/article/11114?SearchType=PlaceAtoZ&SearchStart=S

Durham Records Online has Pittington baptisms from 1574 onwards, but I don't see any for the names you mention. They also have marriages from 1574 and burials from 1593.

Likewise it has Sherburn Hospital baptisms from 1692 onwards but no luck there either.

https://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/NewSearch.php  (Pittington records would fall in 'Durham' district)

According to Durham Records Office, Pittington registers for this time frame were in the IGI, so I'd expect them to be in the current Family Search database, but there are no matches for John Bulmer (or any variation I have tried though I may have missed some).

Do you have any baptism records for the two sons / any indication of their mother's name?
or even anything to say that John snr had always lived in Sherburn (rather than gone there after he married and maybe had a child or two)

A real long shot but the following are on Family Search:

There was a marriage of a John Bulmer to Ann Liddle 1st May 1698, Billingham
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLZ6-8NG

and I can see a baptism for John, son of John Bulmer, 28th Jan 1703, Billingham
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5HQ-P6N

I'd put those in the folder marked 'outside chance, long shot, possibles' until I could discount them for whatever reason.

Piece 0481, Stockton onTees, High Street Chapel (Presbyterian), 1688-1779
12th July 1697, John Bulmer married Mary Deeton

(Ancestry have that register , you said you can access that site)

Thanks for your help, I don't know where the sons were born, Williams burial record in 1781 state he was the son of John Bulmer farmer of Sherburn Durham.
I don't know if John Bulmer snr was originally from Sherburn and moved south into Yorkshire and raised his family there, nor do i know the mother's name, but they both have daughters called Elizabeth so it could be that.  I will keep at it

Thanks

Sorry I wasn't able to find something more specific, but you never know - I have found that posting queries on here can bring relevant replies many months/years later as the posts come up in websearches.

Fingers crossed you end up getting a result.

I had a look at the North-East inheritance database http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/data/simple.php which often throws up useful results, but while there are quite a few Bulmers, I can't immediately see any linked to Sherburn.
