It doesn't help, but I did the same thing.....
I've been trying to work out, with a DNA match, where our connection is.
She said - ooh, I can see you have a [surname] on your tree, so do I, perhaps that's our link.
It didn't ring a bell with me, so I looked up the [surname] and found a whole little family under that name, with a couple of censuses attached and everything.
They weren't attached to anything else, or anyone else, and I can't remember a) who they were b) when I was looking for them and c) why they're a little unattached sprig on my tree.
Doh.
Like you, I was a bit doubtful whether I should delete them in case I subsequently found where they fitted.......
