William Small of East Cowes, IoW.

Hi, I have a direct ancestor named William Small who was born around 1801 in East Cowes. He married a Jemima b1803? in Gosport, Hampshire. They had ten children in all:

William 1828 ?
George 1830 Brightlingsea, Essex
Jane 1833 Hastings, Sussex -- my direct ancestor
Henry 1834 ?
Elizabeth 1836 Newport, IoW
Cardine 1838 ?
John 1840 ?
Richard 1845 Brightlingsea, Essex
George 1849 Sidestrand, Norfolk.

William was a Boatman Coast Guard and the family eventually ended up on the north coast of Norfolk, where Jane married James Dennis to continue the line down to me.

I can't find the parents of William nor the maiden name of Jemima. Any help will be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Yes, from what I've discovered they both passed away in Norfolk. I have the following information from censuses for William:

1851 CENSUS: Trimingham, NORFOLK.
1861 CENSUS: Trunch, NORFOLK.
1871 CENSUS: Mundesley, NORFOLK - Pensioner.

I think this is more likely to be William as Richards middle name was Ridge.

Interesting. Do we know what occupation his father had? Just wondering if he was a boatman/coast guard like William.

Just wondering how accurate the census records are. The 1851 record states William is 50, hence why I've picked 1801 as his YOB.
