Royal Navy tropical uniforms

This is a photo of my dad, in Sasebo, Japan, at around 1950.

I’ve beem told he’s wearing a “No.6” uniform, but try as I might, I can’t find anything via Mr Google about this uniform, no’s 3 and 4 is all I can find.

Could anyone assist?

My Dad wore a similar uniform   around that time.. he also had a t Shirt with square neck and pair of shorts..

Have pics somewhere.....

This would be the Senior Rates main ceremonial uniform.He has done well for himself as it looks like he has been in less than 4 years as there are no Good Conduct Stripes(unless he had been a naughty boy!) under the anchor on the left arm.Strange thing is that he is wearing a Petty Officers uniform but has a Leading Hands single anchor on his sleeve,a Petty Officer would have two crossed anchors.
 thought he might be an Artificer at first but the branch badge on his right arm looks like a Red Cross for a Sick Berth Attendent?

Thanks for your most informative reply.

Dad did at some point become a sick berth petty officer, but I’ve no idea when that would have been. He was in Japan and Korea at the time this photo was taken, serving on HMHS Maine.

He was a naughty boy at one point - fell into a monsoon ditch in the Far East and returned to the ship with bits of weed and slime covering his nice white uniform. Guilty of disgracing the Queens Uniform.

The rig is that of a junior rate wearing Class III [fore-and-aft] tropical No 6. uniform as opposed to [square rig]. It depicts a leading sick berth attendant. The Class III uniform disappeared in 1960 except for Artificers. This uniform looks like that of a petty officer but there are differences.

The uniform is right for a 5th class Artificer.  Fore and aft rig with a single hook and no long service badges yet.  Wasn't aware that this uniform was worn by SBAs.
