Master Tailor
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My Great Grandfather was a master tailor in the census of 1901. I am still trying to find his birth and death and burial information but would be interested in finding out where would I get information on the type of work a master tailor did in the turn of the century.

A Master Tailor is a tailor who has completed an apprenticeship, and has worked on his own for a while (a journeyman tailor), but now has his own premises and apprentices.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Off-the-peg tailoring only became mainstream in the early 20th century. Before that, everyone who wanted a suit would need to visit a tailor.

Likewise, the country had a lot of dressmakers & seamstresses. In some cases this was a euphemism for a lady of ill repute, but the vast majority were respectable.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

If you would like us to help look for his birth and death, then do give us his full name, details of that 1901 census, plus any other info you have about him (eg when /where /who did he marry?)

Thanks Lisdb
My Great Great Grandfather's name was Denis Tuohy (Twohy)
He got married to Bridget fitzgerald in 1865 in St Peter and Paul's church in Kilmallock Co limerick.
I have no other information except he was father to Timothy my Great Grandfather who was born in 1869 and died in 1910 of TB in the cork lunatic asylum. I also know from his marriage cert that his father was James Tuohy also a tailor.
Thanks in advance

Might be best to ask a moderator to move this to the relevant Ireland board then - so you get help from those that know more about Irish records!
