Family Photo taken 1862. Could it be restored?
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 14:20 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon

My 3 x Great Grandparents were John Nuttall born 1824 in Wallsend  Northumberland and Mary Jackson born 1819 in Lowick, Northumberland. They had 9 children John 1844, Mary Ann 1846, Andrew 1848, Elizabeth 1851, George 1854, William 1856, Henry 1858, Margaret 1861 and Hugh 1864.
My 2 x Great grandparents were Edward Rowell and Elizabeth Nuttall daughter of John and Mary. When doing my family tree I found that Andrew, George and William emmigrated to New Zealand and have been swapping information with descendants of William and Andrew Nuttall who have also been researching and David Nuttall sent me a copy of a photo of John and Mary Nuttall and family whcih contains most of them except for John who may have been working and Hugh who wasnt born when the photo was taken. Elizabeth aged 11 is at the back 2nd on the left. Whats also interesting is next to Mary is her mother Isabella Jackson nee Porter aged 80.
Unfortunately the faces are disappearing and I wondered whether they can be restored as this would be a lovely photo to have as its the only one I have seen on this side of the family

Can't help with the restoration but you need to come forward about 20 years. This is 1880's.

I can’t help with restoration either, but agree it is much later than 1862.

Hi All

Thanks for looking at the photo. Could I ask how you can tell that the photo is from the 1880`s please as I will email this relative in New Zealand.

This photo was from a page of a book he has made and sent to me. His Grandfather was Andrew Jackson Rowell, 1st left next to Elizabeth. It lists all the childrens names and ages so if its not 1862 it wouldnt be the right family  :(

The dress & hair styles of the 1860's were quite distinctive as were those of the 1880's. Although the photo isn't great it's quite easy to see which decade it is.

Susan, regarding a restoration, do you know whether the original photo still exists? The image you've posted looks to me like a photocopy of someone's restoration of an original. If you could somehow manage to get us a copy of the original it might be possible to bring out more detail (depending on the condition of that original of course). Failing that you still have Pat's valiant attempt!
Cheers,
Peter
