From Lancs OPC.  Is this the marriage?

Marriage: 19 Jun 1890 St Aidan, Billinge, Lancashire, England
James Harrison - 38, Painter, Bachelor, Billinge
Mary Ellen Wilson - 29, Spinster, Billinge
     Groom's Father: James Harrison, Deceased
     Bride's Father: John Wilson, Deceased

In 1884 there is a marriage in Haydock for a James Harrison with father James and he is a House Painter.  He is listed as being 21years. Edit: aged 22

Marriage: 12 Sep 1884 St James, Haydock, Lancashire, England
James Harrison - (X), 22, Collier, Bachelor, Stone Row, Haydock
Mary Ellen Hughes - 18, Spinster, Lime Kiln Row, Haydock
Groom's Father: James Harrison, (deceased), Collier
     Witness: Joshua Swift; Ellen Gleave

What information do you have that James was previously married?

Lots of folk happy to help.

Kit

Ages of James at the 2 marriages don't correspond.

James and his father were colliers at 1884 wedding not painters.
There was a marriage of a James who was a painter and a Mary in 1887 but it was in Milnrow.

James died in 1898 age 46 so his age on his marriage to mary ellen wilson is right...if it is him that married mary ellen hughes then I wonder if it should have read 32 not 22... if not then its the wrong couple but I cant find another couple with those names who married in 1884

I was also querying that James who married 1890 was a painter whereas the one who married 1884 was a collier, son of a collier.

James Haydock was still a coal miner in Haydock on 1891 census - found by Carole.

In june 1890 my great great aunt Mary Ellen Wilson married a James Harrison at St Aidens in Billinge lancashire. It seems that he had already married in 1884. However the first mrs Harrison was neither deceased or divorced at the time of his second marriage.

Where did you get the information that your James Harrison married in 1884?

James Harrison, the collier was 29 on 1891 census. That fits with him being 22 at his wedding in 1884.
