James Merrion & Eliza 1871
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 18:49 GMT (UK) »
Looking for this couple in 1871 & struggling to find them, any help appreciated!
James was born abt 1826 Belfast Ireland, Marrion sometimes spelled Merrion & a whole host of potential misspellings I guess. Eliza (nee Houghton) was born abt 1836 Preston Lancashire
1861 they are in Portsea, Hants & James is a journeyman baker
Known children
Ann abt 1857 Liverpool, Emma Jane baptised 11 May 1869, Christchurch Liverpool, William George bapt 28 Nov 1871 Liverpool Both baptisms have James as a baker & abode 29 Gerard Street
At some point James dies because Eliza remarries in 1877. She is still at 29 Gerard St in 1881
I would like to find either of them in 1871 and any death details for James or his two daughters whom I assume died as I can't find them either. William George married, had kids and died in 1945 (I think)
This family aren't my direct line, Eliza married into my family, I'm trying to get some background on her. TIA :)

Thanks for the confirmation CaroleW. I have her birth date as 21 Dec 1868 from the baptism record. I have just found her burial, Anfield Cemetery, 18 May 1869 aged 5 months. I was hoping she may have been alive for the 1871 census so she could help find the family :(
Just seen your second reply, I have been trying to find Gerard Street in the 1871, it makes sense that they are there but am useless at searching for streets in huge cities! Help with that muchly appreciated :)

After I've watched Holby City and the really "must see" last episode of Mrs Wilson, I'll scroll through all the Gerard St images to see if I can spot them.  No promises - the enumerator should have been given a handwriting test before they hired him!!

Yes, this makes number 29 significantly “under-occupied” compared to the apparent overcrowding at many nearby addresses.  I wonder whether the Marrion/Merrion family were there but failed to return a census schedule.

Yes - Gerard St is full of multi occupied properties - very few have only one family in them.  I will probably be cross eyed looking at them all ;D

Thank you Carole for your efforts
avm228, that is an interesting suggestion. That address was used on baptisms 11 May 1869 and 28 Nov 1871. Eliza was at the same address when she remarried in 1877, and is there for the 1881 census so I was surprised they weren't there for the 1871. I suppose they could be visiting relatives, even in Ireland.
