Ann Oathwaite Hazelton
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 22:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone, could anyone please help me with any information about Ann Oathwaite Hazelton? She was born around 1759, she was 18 when she married Daniel Blyth on 21 Jan 1777 in St Leonards, Colchester, Essex. Her father is Humphrey Hazelton, yeoman, and while her mother is unknown to me, her uncle is John Oathwaite, a merchant and ship owner, who apparently was from somewhere in the north, presumably Yorkshire, he was nicknamed "Humber Jack" by the locals, and married a significantly older widow named Sarah Spicer in 1746.

I was hoping someone could shed some light on the Hazeltons in the area, and/or the birthplace of John Oathwaite and presumably his sister who was the mother of Ann Hazelton.

Thanks very much in advance!

There's a marriage licence, Humphry Hazelton and Ann Othwaite, 1757
Details here
http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.aspx?ThisRecordsOffSet=6&id=1046290

You can see the allegation on FamilySearch (need to be logged in as free member)

to be married at Beerchurch.

FreeReg has the marriage at Colchester All Saints, 14 April 1763, of
Humphry Hasleton, widower
+
Ann Rudkin, spinster, of St Botolph

Is this connected?

Oh wow! Yes, thank you! Seems like the right people, for sure. I looked now on family search for Humphrey Hazelton, born 1733 (assuming that's his birth year, since it says he was 24 on his marriage record), and didn't see anything, how did you find it? Are any other Hazeltons or Oathwaites mentioned in the parish?

Hi
You are right, there seems to be nothing for Humphrey on FamilySearch, and only that 1763 marriage on FreeReg (which may or may not be the same Humphrey)

At the moment I don't see a baptism or burial for him in Essex.
Hopefully someone may find a baptism of your Ann in one of the parish registers for the Colchester area. These will be on SEAX.

SEAX does have the will of Ann Oathwaite Blyth of Elmstead, widow, 1815, which looks like your lady

And also this remarkable item, Extracts from parish registers of St Leonard Colchester

Thank you both very much. :)

Oh, Amondg, is that the only record for Oathwaite in the parish? Like I said, I think John might have originated further north.

Only one found so far, the records are not indexed and it is a large parish, so I just checked years around possible births and marriages.
I assume you read the PCC will of John Oathwaite and that's how you know he was her uncle.

The Essex Record Office has a number of documents related to the family mostly under the name David Blyth(e). It appears that instead of continuing to run an apparently successful business, ref the will of John Oathwaite as one of the executors he began selling off properties.
