PHILIP WILLIAM JOHNSON/JOHNSTON
« on: Tuesday 11 December 18 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Looking for anything on the above individual's parents, having hit a brick wall.

Family name has developed into 'Johnstone' but Philip went by 'Johnston' on the census and his death is recorded as 'Philip William Johnston' in 1869, in Kensington.

He was married to Jane and had 10 children: Emma, Frederick, Philip, Louisa, Julia, Robert, Alfred, Thomas, Mary and Harry Johnston.

The census from 1861 and 1871 say they were living in St George Hanover Sq, London. They lived for a time in Chippenham (1841), where Philip was an innkeeper.

Philip is recorded on the census as being born in London, Middlesex, on every census that I can find.

Philip's age seems to vary slightly between the census, but there is a Philip William Johnson born on November 23rd 1809 and baptised on 29th April 1810 at St Luke's, London. Given that his death is registered as 'Philip William Johnston', and no Philip William Johnstons were born in London between 1800-1810, this seems the most likely record for his baptism.

If so, I would like to find out more about his parents, recorded as Margaret and William Johnson on the baptism record for St Lukes. I have no idea whether their surname was in fact Johnson, or if Johnston was mis-recorded in the parish record. Either way, I'm having real difficulty finding out anything more about William or Margaret e.g. marriage record, or birth records for either.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Thank you both so much for this! Really appreciate the information on Jane - all new to me!

If anyone has any advice on tracking Philip's parents, then that would be fantastic. Think the Johnston/Johnson spelling could make things pretty tricky, if not impossible, however.

Thanks again

The names at death are not always reliable as the person registering the death would not necessarily have accurate information.

Have you found him named as Philip William on any of the childrens births/baptisms or marriages.
Robert & Louisas baptism both have him as Philip as do Louisa's & Fredericks marriages

Difficult to know for certain, but the best match is Philip William Johnson, born in 1809 and baptised on 29th April 1810 in Chelsea, son of William and Margaret.

The nearest marriage is William Johnson to Margaret Jones in St Marylebone on 29th June 1800.

Philip's is the only baptism I can find in Chelsea but there are some in other aeas after 1800 but also some before.

A William Johnson also married a Margaret Jones in St Pancras on 14th July 1786. They may be the parents of the pre 1800 baptisms.

That's great - thank you, David. I suppose I will have to do a bit of guess work!

Yes, he was Philip William Johnston on Alfred's marriage certificate.
