Mark, you might get nice sharp images but they are no good for restoration.  I've been restoring photos since 1995.

For restoration purposes, images should be scanned in colour mode.

Must say all the excellent restorers on here when I was learning always told me to scan in colour for restoration purposes. 

And my friend the local photographer who does a lot of work for his photographic club, also tells me always to scan in colour.         He is a professional at this game.

If I may but in here...as a restorer of 11 years, I have always been led to believe from what I have read, and also learned from other restorers that a colour scan will always bring out the greatest detail as it picks up the full tonal range of the photo from black, through greys to white. It doesn't matter what colour the original is, the principal is the same.
