In 1841 Elizabeth has no husband in household and is shown as "ind" - independent means.  IF - her husband was Francis and he died in 1837 then James could not be his son.

If James was born 3 years later - his birth would have been registered in Elham as that was the RD Elizabeth was living in both 1841 and 1851.  The only births registered in Elham for that name were 1839 and 1849 

Elizabeth is not shown as a widow in 1851

Does James name a father on his marriage cert?
