Looking for wedding in Folkestone
« on: Wednesday 12 December 18 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for a wedding between James Philpott and Elizabeth Reife, James was born c1801 in Folkestone and Elizabeth c1802. They had a son called James who was born shortly after his father died in 1844. Reife is an unusual name, but I hat been able to find this lady and I wondered if it might be a corruption of another name

Regards

David

Hi David
How do you know Elizabeth's surname is Reife? Where is it recorded? There are no births recorded for a James Philpott with that mmn on the GRO index 1844 +/-  1 year.

Hi Crisame

The is a baptism of a James Philpott in the parish registers in the are with name of the mother as Elizabeth, no father shown. I the 1851 census James appears with his mother Elizabeth living next door to another Philpott family.

Whilst I appreciate that Ancestry Public member trees have to be taken with a pinch of salt, 2 of them show the parents of James as James P and Elizabeth Reife. There is also a death of a James Philpott in the right area prior to the birth of James the younger, so Iam looking at the possibility that rather than an illegitmate birth James's father may have did shortly before he was born/

Your onnets would be much appreciated.

Regards

David

On the GRO index there is a birth reg for a James Philpott June 1/4 1843 registration district Maidstone vol 5 page 283 mother's maiden name not shown which usually means an illegitimate birth.
Is the area you are looking at in the Maidstone reg dist?

Hi Crisane

No the Census records both show place of birth as Sandagte and the family seemed to have lived around the Chsriton area.

There are no deaths of the right age for that "father's" name in the GRO index either.

Sandgate SHOULD be Elham district, as should Cheriton

I see the 1851 census has Elizabeth and young James living next door to a James Philpott, his wife Susanna, daughters  Maria c1847 and Alice c1850
I wonder if this is a relative of hers. If she is a widow as she says then James is a brother-in-law? but if she is trying to save face and was not married then is James a brother?
Cheriton and Sandgate are both in the Elham registration district.

The public tree on ancestry, owner roy_philpott says abouy James marriage to Emma Bridges
 " Marriage December 1873 • Dover (Folkestone)
BMD Volume 2a 1608. Household members include Emma's father and another James Philpott. Is this "uncle" James or the mythical father of James?"
If it was young James' father then he would be in the column for father of the groom and his occupation given. Do you have this marriage certificate? Even if down as father it isn't necessarily so.

A marriage certificate doesn't show household members so are they referring to the witnesses to the marriage? If so then the James 'uncle' is likely to be the one living next door to Elizabeth and young James in 1851.

The tree also has Elizabeth Relfe marrying Francis Philpott in 1831 St Giles without Cripplegate City of London and no proof of a remarriage to a James Philpott
