Hi Elwyn Soutter. The 1855 Marriage Record   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1855/09497/5441893.pdf  at Ballycopeland Presbyterian Church gives the groom Thomas Scott as resident in Grangee, and the bride Eliza Kenan as resident in Killanghy (I can't find any Killanghy so assume it is Killaghy, which adjoins Ballycopeland). I'm trying to work out if there are any clues to be found in the fact they married in Ballycopeland. You were helpful in advising that Grangee didn't have a church which explains why they didn't marry there, but I wonder if Killaghy had a church, and if so what denomination? It may be that Ballycopelend was the only Presbyterian church in the area which then explains why they married there.
regards John

John,

I agree that the townland where the bride lived looks to be Killaghy.

I can confirm there are no churches in Killaghy. Tradition was to normally marry in the bride’s church. Ballycopeland seems the nearest Presbyterian church to Killaghy though, as I mentioned previously, Presbyterians don’t always attend the nearest, but in this case it is.

Map of the townlands around Ballycopeland attached taken from Ros Davies site:

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/genealogy/MAPS/DonaghadeeTownlands.htm

I had a look for Thomas Keenan in Griffiths Valuation for 1860. No sign of him in the Donaghadee area, so he might have been dead by then. There was a Robert Keenan in a labourers cottage in Ballycopeland, plus a Hugh and another Robert nearby. They could be related. I had a scan through marriages around 1855 in that area for any possible siblings for Eliza but did not find any.
Elwyn
