James' father a mystery??
« on: Friday 14 December 18 18:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can some please help with this mystery :-\ James Casey. Born 1.1.1893. Mother Sarah Casey. Living at
3.Snowdon's yard. Stockton. (no father named.
James was baptised Stockton Parish. 11.1.1893. On baptism mother & father shown as Sarah Casey & James Casey
Address shown as Snowdon's yard.
This James Casey shows up again in 1901 census with Alice Casey (nee Dutson) they are at 3 Elliot street with Alice's parents Thomas & Eluzabeth Dutson, Thomas a publican runs the Rail Mill Inn. James is shown as grandson age 8. Alice Casey died same year as census 1901.
1911 census  Stockton lodgings shows Alice's husband James Casey 58 widower and James Casey 18 with him.
James Casey & Alice Dutson had married in Stockton and searches by friends never found James & Alice had any children.
Sarah casey born 1862 (Scotland) married Michael Welsh at Stockton registery.
Sarah Casey 27 spinster. Housewife lane. Father James Casey (my 2x g/grandfather)
Michael Welsh 34 widower. Father Mathew Welsh (dec)
My friends never were able to find Sarah & Michael again.
James Casey on attestation papers shows living at 9 Cleveland street, Hartlepool, crosses that out and put he is living with his uncle Frank Casey at Housewife lane, Francis is my g/grandfather.
James in 1915 is with the Labour Battalion, he ends up in hospital (depression?) he dies in Winterton hospital 1919.
My question is if his fathers name is not shown on birth certificate, but on baptism is shown as James Casey, only two James Casey's I know of were James Casey my 2x g/grandfather and his son James Casey who had married Alice Dutson.
Sarah Casey had married Michael Welsh in 1889, so any child she may have had would have taken name of father Welsh. Its so strange and sad.
All the best.

Where do you get that Sarah Casey was born in 1862 in Scotland?

Presumably all of this would make most sense if she was a sister or other relative of the James who married Alice (if my sums are right she was too old to be his daughter).  Perhaps the marriage to Michael Welsh was short-lived, and she went back to her maiden name?

You mention Francis/Frank - is he the Frank Casey who, aged 22, was living at 2 Snowdon’s Yard in 1891, with wife Isabella 21 and children Hannah 4 and Frank 16mo?  That address seems significant.

I see from the 1871 census (Sheffield) that James, Sarah, Margaret and Francis Casey were all children of James Casey snr (and Mary Ann). RG10/4694/144/47.

So yes it looks as though Sarah Casey (probably estranged from her husband Michael Welsh) made up a paternal name on her illegitimate child’s baptism, which happened to be the name of her father and her brother, and his true paternity is not disclosed.

Would it be possible to get a look up for a death of sarah casey or sarah welsh, I'm sure sarah would have stayed close to her parents.
Thanks.

Another death December 1892 Durham 1892 she 43.

I will try for death certificate after xmas. Now wonder if Sarah's son James was just with her brothers wife in the 1901 census at her parents pub, but still young James is down as g/son.
Many thanks.
