I have access to a transcription of the marriage in 1889 too but although it shows that Margaret was daughter of a William Watson, there are no father's details given at all for Anthony which suggests he was probably illegitimate.

There was a birth indexed in the Dec.qtr.1862 Castle Ward, Northumberland (which was the registration district for Kenton) for an Anthony Turnbull - GRO's site shows no mothers maiden name indicating it was an illegitimate birth.  So, could this be your Anthony's birth?

A David Nixon married a Mary Jane Turnbull in Jun.1863 Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland and on 1871 and 1881 census they show a son Anthony Nixon bc.1863 Kenton, Northumberland (but there is no such birth entry to match this).   I would suggest that the above birth entry for Anthony Turnbull is for the illegitimate son of Mary Jane Turnbull who married David Nixon the following year (although listed as Nixon on the census like his younger siblings I doubt very much that David Nixon was his father).   So, in 1871 and 1881 Anthony Turnbull bc.1863 Kenton shows as Anthony Nixon (surname of his stepfather) but his legal surname was Turnbull which was the name he married under.   (Anthony Nixon bc.1863 Kenton 'disappears' as your Anthony Turnbull bc.1863 Kenton 'appears'.

Annette

Annette, you are brilliant! Anthony had a son named David Nixon TURNBULL and his first daughter was named Mary Jane! I think you may be right!

I think this is right though now I am sad that I’m unlikely to find out who the father was..

I think this is right though now I am sad that I’m unlikely to find out who the father was..

Since Anthony named a son David Nixon Turnbull one would assume that either he was fond of his stepfather or indeed David Nixon was his natural father.

Might this be Mary Jane on the 1851?:
