Group of soldiers - help please Y&L I think
« on: Saturday 15 December 18 15:09 GMT (UK) »
This is a postcard from my "shoebox" - I have no idea of who, where, when....I'd appreciate any suggestions please.  I don't know where to start to work out anything about it.
The badges are blurred but I think it's the Yorks & Lancs Regiment, which was our local WWI regiment here in WRY.

Cap badge is right I'd say. Territorial Force shoulder insignia detectable on some shoulders.  Mixture of old and new pattern tunics.  Two NCO instructors (?) with recruits?

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

The background is suggestive of a training camp (hut?)4 - 30 men.

I don't know if there is any significance in the lanyards worn by a few of the soldiers (one right shoulder, the others left shoulder).

No medal ribbons - this proves nothing but might suggest pre-1918.  With the mix of tunic pattern 1917 is a likely date.  (I don't know precisely when the economy pattern was introduced)

The cap badge is indistinct - but certainly consistent with the Yorks & Lancs Regiment.

Thanks for the input. I've shared this photo on our local history forum. I thought one of the men looked like my great uncle. A few people have said that he is on here (though they say it's not the man I'd picked out). He was killed in 1917, so the fact other family members have identified him dates this to pre1917.

Winfield Crawshaw attested 6th December 1914 and was in the 2nd/4th battalion, York & Lancaster Regiment,
which had been formed at Sheffield on the 21st September 1914. The
following March, they moved to Bulwell, Nottingham to join the 187th
Brigade of the 62nd Division. In April they moved on to Strensall
(York), then Beverley, Gateshead, Larkhill (Wiltshire) and Bungay
(Suffolk). They were mobilised for war in January 1917, embarking for
France on the 12th January.
So, that's the date sorted out. A lot of locals joined the Y&L but no one on the local forum recognises anyone.

Many thanks, I'll have a good look at the links tomorrow. Jim, am I missing something? Why can I rule out the men you've marked with a red Cross?

He was a Pte. so you can rule out the NCO's.
He joined in 1914 so that rules out the men in the post 1915 economy tunics.
He would have been 20 in this so that rules out the older men.
My best guess would be the man to the right of the L/Cpl. as he looks the right age whereas the others unmarked look slightly older.
