John Moss bookbinder and family help or advice
« on: Saturday 15 December 18 21:40 GMT (UK) »
I am attempting to trace to the family
of John and Sarah Moss in London His profession was a bookbinder

I know his profession as his son John Jr born circa 1839 and whose profession was a mariner
married twice in Sunderland Durham  lists in father as a bookbinder and on each census up to 1901 he lists his place of birth as London England.

I found his parents and siblings on the 1841 census and it indicated all were born in the  Civiil Parish of St James Clerkenwell
Name   Age
John Moss   40  bookbinder
John Moss   3
Sarah Moss   40
Sarah Moss   10
James Moss   16  bookbinder asst?
Mary Moss   13
Sophia Moss   7

I found a marriage for Sophia at Gray's Inn Road St Jude Camden, England 26 Aug 1866 to a William Ayres brushmaker and her father is  listed as JOhn Moss bookbinder
I felt I found her on the 1871 census St Marlybone but the age for Sophia does not fit.  She would of been 34 but the census is as follows
Ayres William   32    brushmaker   Hoxton Middlesex  He is listed as blind and deaf.
           Sophia    25                         Derby Mdsx
            Sophia     9                          Soho
I cannot find a christening for their child and they do not show up on subsequent censuses.

That is all I have been able to find.

I cannot find any of theof the children on the   1841  census in baptism records.

I cannot find any of them in census records  after 1840 except the John Moss who went to Sunderland and was a mariner.
I cannot find a possible marriage of his father  John Moss bookbinder to a Sarah.

Any advice appreciated in my attempt to trace this family back.
Seasons Greetings to all from Canada.

Thankyou

Jim

If they married in 1866 and have a 9 year old child in 1871 that doesn't compute.  Was Sophia born as Sophia Moss before her mother married or did she belong to William Ayres  :-\

Possible Sophia Ayres age 38 in 1901 as a servant born Marylebone

1891 servant age 28 born Westminster

Sophia Mary Moss born Dec 1861 Strand - maybe - no mothers name but I don't know if this is the right person

Death for Sophia M Ayres born 1861 age 84 in 1945 Wandsworth
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire

Jim, just a note that the 1841 census doesn’t tell you what parish people were born in - if they have a Y in the relevant column that just tells you (at most) that they were born in the county (in this case Middlesex).  It’s also not very reliable as it’s just a squiggle rather than a more considered entry.

Sophia Mary Moss may be the one born 5 November 1861 and subsequently baptised 25 February 1866 Marylebone as Sophia Mary Hodson Moss - parents John Hodson and Sophia Moss.

Perhaps this is the right child - and John Hodson was Sophia’s partner before she married William Ayres?

The birthplace of Sophia Ayres (snr) per 1871 is not Derby, Middlesex (which doesn’t exist) but just Derby.

This is all helpful and thank you all for your help.

I think John sr and his wife Sarah are going to be hard to trackdown and it still puzzles me as to why not a child shows  as being baptized.   I looked at non conformist records but I could find very few and had no luck at all with John Sr and Sarah nor any of the children.
