Tasmanian brick wall - HELP!!!
« on: Sunday 16 December 18 07:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello fellow RCers,

Hoping for a Christmas miracle,

Robert Leach, a widower born 1819 Hampshire, transported to Tasmania aboard the Isabella 2 in 1842 on a 14 year term for stealing, pardoned in 1851, married convict Anne Mallon in Fingal 1852, children Robert Steven Leach born 1858 and Leah Ann Leach born 1860.....then....nothing....no other record found. I am looking for Tasmanian records if available?

A TROVE reference to a Robert Steven Leech impounding livestock in a public pound in St Mary’s in 1871 ( my RSL would only be 13?).

I would love some help in finding any details of what may have happened to them, when they died, if the children married? Any assistance would be hugely appreciated.

Jo  ;)

Robert Leach's convict record says 'again convicted'

and refers to this page as his second conduct record

He stole a saddle and received 12 months hard labour 1860 - 61

How does this fit with the other, John Leach and Ann Mellan?

Hi Jamjar and Mathewj64,

Thank you both for your input, I appreciate anyone else looking to help  :)

Jamjar I had seen the 1907 death but, other than the age, have no reason to think this is my Robert, there are other Victorian Roberts that this could be, but I’m still looking to see if I can find Robert and family coming to Vic. Leah is the name of Roberts mother and I am confident that Mullins and Mallon are the same and she is Robert and Anne’s daughter, although I have found no other reference to her.

Mathewj64, thank you for the conduct record link. I had not seen the second and struggled to read the first one. I had found a couple of possible references to him on TROVE but am unsure if they are him or not.

I also have a note (but can’t find my source) that Anne was arrested for larceny as Ann Brown or Leach in 1875 in Launceston. This would suggest that The family was still in Tassie in the 1870’s at least. I assume they would be unlikely to leave at a later time due to their ages but may be completely wrong?

I would dearly love a death record for him or Ann or the children, or a marriage for the children?

Any and all suggestions are hugely appreciated.

Jo  :)

Hmmm, no idea! Robert is the only member of his family to be transported so John is not a brother, and Ann Mellon? Now I’m even more confused?

Cullinswood is the abode given on Robert Jnr & Leah Anne’s baptism, I had seen another reference to the RL and gold watch, but not the address, so thank you as I had dismissed this as I didn’t think he would own a gold watch! How would he own a gold watch?

So they are there until 1860 when Leah is born and in the aea until the 1870’s, and then.......

Are there burial records for that area that I can access online?
