PALL MALL - Dunedin!

Here is a newspaper report from 1949 which identifies the location of Pall Mall.

Albion Place, as currently seen, runs straight from George to Great King Streets. The newspaper report, however, suggests that Pall Mall is now Albion Lane that runs from Gt King St on the south side of the parking building, then turns and runs along the back of the parking building, parallel to George Street. Albion Lane joins the current Albion Place, which runs past the north side of the parking building

So it appears we had Pall Mall Alley & later Pall Mall Place? Not surprised that the former disappeared. I imagine it consisted of a number of dreadful, seedy, run down hovels, not fit for human habitation.

When I found mention of Pall Mall I was curious as I have not come across it in Dunedin, so thank you for pinpointing it for me.

I found a photograph of the area from 1901 - The "A&T Inglis" building is just before St Andrews St, and the church you can see behind it is the Hanover St Baptist, on the corner of Hanover and Gt King Sts. Pall Mall is in the area between the two, and the terraced houses you can see are the "comfortable brick dwellings".

I wonder how it arose, considering there is no lane of any sort indicated on any of the early surveys I managed to find.

Did someone, Mr Dick?, buy up several sections and merge them in some way?
