John Moore born c 1844, where was he in 1851 and 1861?
« on: Sunday 16 December 18 12:59 GMT (UK) »
Unsure whether this belongs on this board or the Durham one, but he says he was born in Northallerton and its earlier records for him I am looking for.

I am sure  about John from 1865 (his first marriage) through to a likely, but as yet unconfirmed, death in 1910 aged 66. In all the records from 1871 onwards, this man worked as a railway signalman.
I am struggling prior to 1865 though. The only info I have is that he consistently claims to have been born c 1844 in Northallerton and, from his marriage to Hannah W[e]ightman, nee Harwood in 1881, his Dad was John Moore, a labourer.
The records I do have are listed below, to save anyone duplicating effort if they have time to look.
ANY straw I can clutch at would be gratefully received :-)

Thanks Rosie, good of you to take the time to help.

I have seen that census but was very unsure about it as it says the Dad was a farmer of 14 acres, yet in 1881 when he married Hannah he said his Dad was a labourer. Its gone into the 'possibles' folder now though as its a long shot but workable if I can find something to corroborate it.

I may have to send for one of his other marriage records to see what they say about his Dad. Unless someone knows of a source of parish registers/ transcripts that are available online that may cover 1865  and 1873 marriages? I haven't done much research in this area and don't know what is  available.
Modified - apologies, Stockton is, of course, in Durham . No idea why I typed the above, this man has me punch drunk today!

thanks
Boo

An online tree has the Elizabeth Moore from that family dying in Northallerton, Dec qtr 1858, but the GRO has that death indexed with age 69 so apparently not a match.

I’d have thought the first marriage certificate should be a priority, given that it is the earliest confirmed sighting of the correct John.

Thanks avm,

I'm smiling about the online tree, so many don't check registrations against anything else and there's never a category for 'possible but not confirmed' on these online trees. Sadly its probably been copied many times since.

John is what I class as a 'Marie-Tontie' - i.e. he was married [on]to my 2x Great Aunt. I have their marriage certificate and have done for some time.
Though I'd really like to tidy his details up (I'm currently working my way through everyone trying to fill in gaps) getting certificates for 2 wives before he married into my tree has been way down on the list the budget allows for so far.

I may yet get these certs but I'm trying to find and explore other, not so expensive, options first.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
