Marriage of Robert SUGDEN
« on: Monday 17 December 18 09:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to find details of the marriage of Robert SUGDEN in Kidderminster December quarter of 1882.  It was probably to a Sarah HORTON.  Robert left for America just three years later but no mention is made in his obituary of this second wife and I can't find her on US censuses.  Does anyone have access to the parish record which might give more detail?  Otherwise I shall have to bite the bullet and buy a certificate.
Merry Christmas all

These are the people in the index for the 1882 marriage

Sarah Horton
Rhoda Knight
Joseph Mumford
Robert Sugden

Later records show Joseph and Rhoda Mumford.

I can’t see any parish records for Robert and Sarah. Are you looking for other confirmation?

I see that Robert still claims to be married in the 1900 US census (Philadelphia, with son George W & family).

Presumably this is the relevant passenger list?

Lord Gough, Liverpool-Philadelphia arr 23 August 1885

Robt Sugden 40 b England, laborer
Wm Sugden 16 b England, laborer [his son George William b 1868]

What happened to his daughters?  Perhaps they were with Sarah somewhere?

Hey.  You folks are good.  Edith Kate married in 1902 in America and her sister Clara married in America in 1894.  If they didn't travel with their father and brother it suggests that they went to US later ie between 1885 and 1894.  Logically their mother would have gone with them which would rule out the 1918 death of Sarah Sugden in Kidderminster.  Perhaps she returned home.
