Martin,

We used to perform:
Program Testing
Unit Testing
System Testing
User Acceptance Testing
Regression Testing

How many of these are skipped, or not done properly, these days?

Why do so many banking system updates (as an example) go so wrong?

Doesnt have the same flexibilty as before. ie skipping to the next property to see if family or future in laws lived nearby
I hadn't got as far as noticing that - it's a major new flaw and will greatly reduce the usefulness of FreeCEN for finding out where places were.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

No, I always get "Error 503 Service Unavailable
No server is available to handle this request" as soon as I click on 'Search the Database'.

When the mainframes were thrown out so were all the proven procedures that went along with mainframe development in analysis, design and testing.

I shouldn't complain as it contributed to being paid rather a lot of money to retire five years early.

There is a standard thing management in ALL spheres does.

On being appointed, they make changes in the area where they are bound to be seen most, just to prove they have arrived and are "doing" something.

Se we see unnecessary redesigns of websites, changes of presenter on your favourite radio programmes. There are standard phrases used to explain things to the public. "A more modern look" (it didn't have enough animation and video ads), "Building on a successful formula" (I have no idea why 10 million people loved him/her, so I'm getting rid while I've got the chance)

If you follow a soap, there will be a killing off of major characters as soon as a new editor appears,   along with a forced increase in the number of disasters-per-episode. I remember in the early days of Coronation Street, that figure was about 0.5. I caught one at my mum's the other day and realised it had risen to 4, and I didn't see the second episode of the evening. "It more realistic", they will claim, but do any Rootschatters live in places with two dozen disasters per week?
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

A member of my family is a software engineer (I think that is right.) He complains that the sales people tell the client they can have their new system next month, while the software people know they can't have it ready in that time.
Whenever some huge system breaks down, I think of all the engineers working all hours to try and sort it out, probably for the above reason!

KGarrad I think you might have worked for the same outfit as me.  I'd look you up in the old green loose-leaf internal directory I spirited away but I think I might have got rid of it.  It started going downhill for me when a massive development was outsourced to a sub-continent concern whose staff had only a basic grip of our language and no knowledge at all of the UK banking system.

Thankfully redundancy and early retirement came to my rescue.

Doesn’t this also fall within the age old rule of “three”? I.E. you can have a project (1) on time, (2) on budget and (3) it will work - but you can never have all three on the same project.
