William Nichols abt.1786 - ?
« on: Wednesday 19 December 18 14:35 GMT (UK) »
This post is partially connected to a previous post about Mary Ann Nichols which I started on 13th December 2018.
I am trying to find information regarding her father  William who was born about 1786.
William was a bookbinder married to Sarah ? which information I got from the baptism of John Alfred Nichols (my wife's 2nd great grandfather).
While looking for other instances of children born to a William & Sarah where William was a bookbinder I found a total of 13 children born/baptised between 1804 & 1828 although I am not 100% certain they are all the same family.
William, Sarah Elizabeth & James Trevenen were all baptised at St.Dunstan & All saints, Stepney1809
Henry & John Alfred Baptised at Spitalfields Christ Church Tower Hamlets 1813
George Edward baptised at St.Mathew Bethnal Green 1815
James Callendar baptised at St.Leonard, Shoreditch. 1817
Charles & Frederick baptised at St.Mathew Bethnal Green 1820
Mary Ann (1823), Elizabeth Louisa (1824), Louisa (1826) & George (1828) all baptised at St.Dunstan & All saints, Stepney.
An 1841 census shows William (pensioner age 55)& Sarah (55) living at Shoreditch with James (20),Mary A. (15) & Louisa E. (15)
So this would tie in with some of the children
An 1851 census shows Sarah as a Widowed Annuitant living at 31 Lower John Street, St.George in the East.
Now to the crux of the matter.
As Sarah is now a widow in 1851 & based on the marriages of Mary Ann in 1843 & Elizabeth Louisa in 1848.
I looked for all deaths between 1841 & 1851 on the BMD site & cross referenced them with the GRO site to get deaths of the correct ages & I came up with just 2 deaths,
William Nichols died 12th January 1849 occ. clerk age 66 address 28 Jame(?) street.
William Nichols died 5th July 1845 occ. carpenter age 60 address 12 John Street.
Does any one think either of these could be the correct William that I am looking for & would anyone like to have a copy of either death certificate.

Possible marriage at St George in the East 5.1.1801
William Nichols and Sarah Prior
wit Joseph Williams and Sarah Garrie.

ps earlier clandestine marriage may somehow be related

Thank you ciderdrinker for this piece of information. It will be worth bearing in mind.
The consensus of opinion for a lot of family trees is that William married Sarah keys in 1811 which would suit if the birth/baptisms of the children had started with Henry & John Alfred (direct ancestor)in 1813. but having found the other 3 children born between 1804 & 1809 this casts a doubt about Sarah Keys (assuming as I said that they are all the same family) also I am suspicious about accepting information from family trees.
I am trying to find any information about bookbinders around the early 1820's if anybody else can help.

Hi agray1949,

A couple of other possibilities for the death of William...
William Nichols, age 62, buried 4 Mar 1849, Limehouse
William Nickols, age 60, buried 20 Sept 1850, Camberwell, from Workhouse
William Nicholls, age 59, died 15 sept 1850, Camberwell (possibly the same as above)
William Nicholls, age 67, buried 14 Jan 1850, Southwark St Mary Magdalene Bermondsey
William Nicholls, age 75, of Chapel Place, buried 17 Jan 1851, Islington
William Nicolls, age 64, of Montague Street, buried 3 Sept 1843, Spitalfields

Thank you Jo for the information.
If I take the 1841 census as being correct then that would rule out some of these.
age 62 buried 1849 would make him born in 1787 so 14 in 1801 at time of marriage (too young)
age 59/60 buried 1850 would make him born in 1790 so 11 in 1801 at time of marriage (too young)
age 67 buried 1850 would make him born in 1783 so 18 in 1801 at time of marriage (possibility)
age 75 buried 1851 would make him born in 1776 so 25 in 1801 at time of marriage (too old)
age 64 buried 1843 I have that death certificate. he was a pauper & died on 24th August (too old)

Thank you but I think I may have to park this search for now as I now have 3 death certificates which are no good to me & I am reluctant to keep purchasing more.
