1920's.The collar bar is a bit of a giveaway. They were made popular by Officers during the war. Superseded by collar stiffeners late 20's. You don't se them much after that.

But turn ups on trousers were very fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940s turn ups and pocket flaps were prohibited to save material. My feeling is 1950s for the photo.

ps Could even be 1960s as I remember some of my more dedicated followers of fashion at my school wearing collar bars about 1962-1964!

Turnups became fashionable around 1910. By the early 20's they'd just about had their day.
Collar bars did re-emerge in the 60's but were popular only with the younger generation.

I'm not very good at this kind of thing so feel free to shout me down if I'm being stupid but doesn't the fact that he's smiling indicate that it's later? Not sure when people actually did start smiling on photos so apologies if it's a red herring.  :)

I've just turned up  a photo of my Dad with his brothers and they're all wearing those pins behind the tie knot. It was taken early 1920s.  They were smiling  ;D

I'd trust Jim with the dates before anyone else. He's hardly ever been wrong since I've known him and that is many many years. I joined in Feb 2006  :)

The air vent would be built in when the house was built and cavity walls were used, they supeceeded solid walls,by exactly when?
My house is 1929,has cavity walls and mine has something built on the wall where neighbours s houses have such s vent .

I think the date has pretty much been nailed but air vents were in solid walls too. I have worked on properties built later than 1929 that were still solid walls, horrendous for damp and condensation issues.

Hi..

Thanks everyone,
My house was built in 1923 and has similar air vents as the house shown and also
some below the damp course. It is single brick with pebble dash on side and backwalls as in the photo.
I think the photograph would have been taken in Wrangle, Old Leake or Leverton area in Lincolnshire.

So what date are we going with?

Its been very interesting reading your knowledgeable thoughts.

Merry Christmas to you All. :)
