Regarding the requirement to provide a copy of the persons death certificate, will a scan of the original or an electronic version from the GRO be acceptable?

No, a scan is not acceptable, but  they will return the certificate to you with the records.

The new PDF for a death is only available, at the moment, for deaths up to 1957.

Ok...thanks to all. I'll get in touch with my relative and see if he has his father's death certificate and take it from there.
