Birth (illegitimate) registered twice, in Dumfriesshire & Roxburghshire ??
« on: Thursday 20 December 18 00:29 GMT (UK) »
Would there have been a particular reason for an illegitimate birth to have been registered in both Canonbie, Dumfriesshire and Castleton, Roxburghshire.

Elizabeth Cairns was born on 28 March 1870 in Newcastleton to Jane Cairns who was living at Whinbush, Canonbie at the time.

The birth was registered in Castleton on the 11th April and in Canonbie on the 27th April. The Canonbie entry includes the date and place of the previous registration.

Cheers, Doug.

Not that I can see. I found both entries on the ScotlandsPeople website and there were no RCE's.

The actual contents of column 6 on the Canonbie entry read " 1870 April 11th at Newcastleton (signed) John Brown Registrar. April 27th Transcribed (??) at Canonbie Whitelaw Registrar." The question marks are mine. It appears to be "transcribed".

Possibly because she gave birth away from her usual residence the birth was registered in the parish of the birth and that of the usual residence I remember a thread on here where this occurred as well but can't remember the title

I have duplicated birth certificates on my tree as well, but the reason was quite simply that the parents split before the baby was born and were living apart, the father in Glasgow, the mother about thirty miles away.       A certificate was requested by both parents, and one was issued in the area where each parent was living.

It was supposed to be the standard practice that where the birth occured away from the parent/s residence and reg. district, the clerk/registrar would pass a note of this event to the registrar for the parent/s normal residence. This would then be re-registered there and would show clearly that the birth had taken place in a different registration district.

Thank You Monica, that makes sense. It's a pity that didn't happen with English registrations!!

Standard procedure. If a baby was born in one district and the parents' or mother's domicile was in a different district, the Registrar of the district where the birth took place was instructed to send the details to the Registrar of the district where the parents/mother were domiciled, and that Registrar was required to copy the information into his registers.

Edit: sorry, I see that Monica has already said that. Apologies.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
