Mary Ann Hood (nee Parker), 1855-?
« on: Thursday 20 December 18 13:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I have an ancestor whose death I have been unable to locate for over 10 years. It feels like I have tried everything but am still not locating it, I'm either missing something obvious or it really is a mystery!

Here is all the information I have on my 3x Great Grandmother:

Mary Ann PARKER

born 17 February 1855, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
bapt 13 January 1856, Gateshead, Durham, England

Daughter of George PARKER (1828-1905) and Hannah HEEL (1830-1857). Her father remarried to Mary FALLON in 1860 in Edinburgh after his first wifes death.

1861 Census, Edinburgh

8 Back of Canongate

HEAD: George PARKER, age 32, born England, Glass Maker
WIFE: Mary PARKER, age 21, born Ireland
SON: Matthew PARKER, age 9, born England
DAUGHTER: Mary PARKER, age 6, born Edinburgh

Cannot locate in Census of 1871

Marriage Record

27 June 1875, Parish Church of St John, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England

Groom: Stirling Begbie HOOD
Age: 22
Condition: Bachelor
Profession: Brass Moulder
Residence: Sunderland Street
Fathers Name: Stirling HOOD
Fathers Profession: Rope Maker

Bride: Mary Ann PARKER
Age: 20
Condition: Spinster
Residence: Sunderland Street
Fathers Name: George PARKER
Fathers Profession: Glass Maker

1881 Census, Gateshead

39 Grosvenor Street

HEAD: Stirling HOOD, married, age 26, Brass Moulder, born Gateshead
WIFE: Mary Ann HOOD, married, age 26, born Scotland
DAUGHTER: Isabella Ramsay HOOD, age 4, Scholar, born Gateshead
SON: Matthew P HOOD, age 2, born Gateshead
SON: Stirling HOOD, age 8 months, born Dartford, Kent

1891 Census, Gateshead

2 Pollock Street

HEAD: Stirlng Hood, married, age 35, Brass Moulder, born Gateshead
WIFE: Mary Ann HOOD, married, age 36, born Scotland
DAUGHTER: Isabella Ramsay HOOD, age 14, born Gateshead
SON: Matthew Parker HOOD, age 12, born Gateshead
SON: Stirling Hood, age 10, born London
DAUGHTER: Harriet Mary HOOD, age 8, born Gateshead
DAUGHTER: Lavina HOOD, age 6, born Gateshead
DAUGHTER: Margaret HOOD, age 4, born Gateshead
SON: John HOOD, age 1, born Gateshead

That is the last census I can find that she appears on. There are two more children born, Harriet McCauley HOOD (born 1893, Gateshead) and Mary Ann HOOD (born 1895, Gateshead), but then nothing.

She seems to disappear off the face of the earth.

Her husband Stirling HOOD appears in 1901 with the family in Gateshead, still listed as married but his wife is missing.

He is STILL listed as married in 1911, living with his daughter in Gateshead - but his wife is still missing!

I have tried checking deaths, seeing if she was remarried, moved back to her native Scotland, but still no luck.

Can anyone possibly help in any way? Sometimes when people take a fresh look they can find something obvious!

Thanks!

You can search the 1901 census for Durham, just putting born in Scotland (exact), Relation to Head Inmate (exact), and Gender Female, you will get a list of Initials and see if any of them fit.You could also do the same for Northumberland.

I wonder if any of the Hood death notices on here might be relevant to your research?

There is a Stirling Begbie Hood - wonder if age is incorrect?

There is a Mary A. Hood admitted to Durham Asylum 1 Jan 1897. Discharge date isn't clear, could be 01 Oct 01, but looks more like 07 Oct 07. Marked as "Not Improved".

Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill

I would not put in Scotland as a place of birth. In case the "where born" column has not been filled in.

1911 census was taken on 2nd April.
Less than two weeks later Stirling was buried in Gateshead.

You can see the 1911 census entry for the Asylum at RG14; Piece: 31320; Page: 1
Or Cumberland, St Cuthbert, Enumeration District: 17 The patients are only shown by initials, and all the birthplaces are shown as unknown.
