Wonderful photos and what a interesting thread to start! 

I have added  links to the North Shields mugshots held at Tyne and Wear Archives.  They have so many more than those shown here too! The Nora Jane McCartney shown stole from my ancestor Mary Watson nee Conroy who at that point was a laundry woman in Church Street.  Mary was the sister of my Great Grandfather Simon Peter Conroy.

It is a shame it wasn't the other way on .. perhaps I then might have had a photo of this ancestor ..   .. can't believe I said that!  Mary was a widow at that point and had had ten children to husband William Watson.

I wonder if anyone else might know of a story connected with these North Shields mugshots?

Wouldn't these be a wonderful addition to an ancestral album.  Just imagine:

"This is a portrait in oils of my 6x great grandparents.  And these are watercolour portraits of their eldest son and his wife.  Here are silhouettes of their children.  Now we see a daguerrotype of my 3x great grandfather.  And here he is in a studio photograph with his family.  These are cartes-de-visite of his children.  And now we have a mugshot of my great-grandmother"

I can say that - I bought a  mugshot photo of my Grandad's cousin who committed a crime in the North Shields area in 1911 - Jacob Conroy.  Looking at his face it looks like he might have been in a bit of a scrap before the photo was taken.  It was a long time ago, so I don't mind at all discovering about black sheep ancestors ..

I have Great x 2 Grandparents who were charged with murder but were acquitted.  This was the Matfen Murder trial which was held in 1856.  James and Elizabeth Conroy.  I do believe they were innocent as they claimed.  I just wish the newspapers had provided a photo of them along with all the coverage.
