Elizabeth Emily SPIRRELL born 1872 East Pennard

Hi, I am a descendant of Elizabeth Emily Spirrell (as spelt on the England & Wales Births record), born 1872, East Pennard.

(Elizabeth) Emily appears on the 1881 and 1891 census with her parents Edward and Elizabeth Sperill together with siblings John Hatcher (step brother), William Hatcher (step brother), Frank, James and Jane Sperill, living at Huckey Mead, East Pennard.

I see a marriage for an Edwin Spirrell and Elizabeth Hatcher on 2 June 1870 at East Pennard. This must be one and the same person as the Hatcher step children were with them in 1881 and 1891. The marriage record gives Edwin/Edward's father as James Spirell, labourer.  Edwin/Edward is dead by the 1891 census but on the two census records it shows he was born in Somerset.

Searching for Edward/Edwin's baptism record I find one for Edwin Spurrell on 11 June 1848 in East Pennard. This shows Edwin's father as James Spurrell and mother as Ann. There is a marriage record for a James Bush Spearell marrying either a Sarah Rissiter or Ann Martin Allen on 3 Feb 1845.

The problem starts when I try and find Edwin/Edward with his parents on the early census records.
In 1851 and 1861 Edwin is with his sister, Julia b.1846, but they are not with their parents. They are living with their aunt/uncle - Stephen and Maria Allen in Huckey Mead, East Pennard. I should also say they are both listed as "Spinel" on the 1861 census, just to complicate things.

Also whilst Julia's birth is given as Baltonsborough, Som, Edwin is listed as born Cardiff, Glam (1861) and Monmouthshire, Wales (1851). On the 1851 and 1861 census Edwin's birth stated Somerset.

I have found some Spirells (plus different spellings) living in Ponty pool, Monmouthshire in the 1800's but cannot work out a connection to my East Pennard family. 

Why are these two children not with their mother and father, and where are their parents?

I would be very grateful for anyone's help.

Yes Elizabeth White first married William Hatcher in 1864, then Edward/Edwin Sperill in 1870, and finally Frank Balch in 1893.

Spurrels I found on 1871 census in Cwm, Panteg, Monmouthshire.

Interestly James Bush Spearell (father of Edwin/Edward Spirell) was born in Batcombe 13 Apr 1821, so there is a connection there.

I'd wondered whether, after Edwin/Edward was born, James had ended up in prison, and that was why I couldn't find him on the censuses - there is a prison in Shepton Mallet.

If so presume James Bush father has died before 1864.

Ann Martin at East Pennard Oct 1 1820 d of Ann Martin pauper East Pennard

Mother Ann Martin bapt 22 April 1804 d of John and Sussanna Martin who had a daughter Maria Martin 6 Feb 1800 who went on to marry Stephen Allen in 1822.
Ann Martin senior was buried 29.4.1843 at East Pennard age 38 still living at home with mom and dad on the 1841 census.

Let's hope that Stephen Allen didn't have a daughter with one sister and marry the other.
