Help locating this place?!
« on: Thursday 20 December 18 20:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, I’m looking for a place named Muirhead Farm (or Muirhead Farmhouse), within the parish of New Monkland, Lanarkshire.

I believe it may have been near Wattston/Greengairs as the family lived near there. The name must’ve changed as I can’t find any record of it...

There is a Muirhead marked on the OS map:

(hopefully that will work)

This is a link to the 1898 OS map:

Zoom in, top left quadrant of the map.

I can't thank you all enough!!

Is anyone any good at locating the area it would have been on Google Earth for me?
(I'm planning to visit it for photographs)

These are the rough co-ordinates:
55 55 18 51N
3 58 18 08 E

Search for Luggiebank and head south-east. Look for the tree-lined stream just north of a straight road called Hulks Road.

I have to say that looking at it, the old buildings now appear to be without a roof!

Thank you, I just asked my Father and he knew exactly where it is. His Grandfather was born there in the very late 1800s. Very exciting to see that it is ruined and hasn't been refurbished or built over!

Thanks again.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15&lat=55.9214&lon=-3.9744&layers=5&right=BingHyb = put the cursor on the name on the old map and it will also be on the satellite view.

At bottom right of the screen you will see the map references - NS769716 is the National Grid reference, and there are also the latitude and longitude. If you put the NGR into http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/ns769716 like this you will get a modern map and see what it looks like on the ground.

I think Google maps uses lat and long but I prefer to use a decent map.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
