Can't find James Ellis born abt 1815 supposedly born in Cymer
« on: Friday 21 December 18 14:58 GMT (UK) »
Help!!!!!

I know he was alive in 1861 although his age is confusing. He marries Mary Davies in 1856 in Merthyr. His father is William who was a thatcher and dead before his marriage. Got James and Mary on the 1861 census with a son William. He dies in 1868 and is nowhere before 1856. I know its not the James born in 1815 in Bonvilston who went and died in Utah.

Can anyone find him before 1856 please?

Thanks in advance

In 1861 he was in the Merthyr Tydfil RD but the 1868 death is in Bridgend.  In 1871 there is a Mary Ellis - widow - whose profile fits the 1861 entry but no son William with her.   As William was only 1yr old in 1861 I would have expected to find him with Mary unless he died pre-1871.

In 1871 there is 8yr old Morgan b Denbigh plus Esther 5 and 2mth old Mary both b Bridgend.  Mary’s birth does not fit with an 1868 death unless she was illegit

No birth reg for any of the children to check mothers maiden name.

Can you tell us what info you have that confirms it is the right death and the right 1861/1871
entries?

Was he a bachelor or a widower on the marriage cert?

I have his death certificate and inquest report. It is right on the 71 census apart from Morgan is supposed to me Mary and Mary is supposed to be Margaret who was illegitimate and was a twin with William who died shortly after birth. Mary had five children in total. William Mary Esthermy great grandmother James Margaret and William. Both William’s and James died before 1871

James was an iron worker so could be him. Thanks. I need to find his parents. I know his father was William who was a thatcher and dead by 1856 when James and Mary married and I have the certificate. The only William who was a thatcher and the right age and dead before 1856 was in Devon

Do you actually know his father was dead?  I know James may have said he was when he married but have you located a death for William the thatcher?

Sorry, I am confused

Mary had five children in total. William Mary Esthermy great grandmother James Margaret and William. Both William’s and James died before 1871

Mary who is supposed to be Margaret was born in Newcastle in 1871 (Age 2 months on census)  I can't see a death in Northumberland for her 'twin' William before 1871 census.

How do you know Mary had 5 children

So Esther was your great grandmother.  There is no birth reg for her so does she name her father as James on her marriage cert?
