Thanks everyone.  He was admitted via a Field Ambulance with VWO (roughly a month after arriving at the Front) but returned to his regiment 10 days later; sadly he was later mortally wounded and died on 8 May 1917.

I am fairly certain that the 2nd and 3rd letters are U O as in unknown origin found in terms such as  FUO Fever (of) Unknown Origin and PUO Pyrexia (of) Unknown Origin.  The sort of diagnosis when initial examination has not found the cause.

He spent a week in the FA but within 3 weeks was diagnosed with albumenuria (a symptom of kidney disease) which at 23 General Hospital was found to be nephritis a kidney infection and resulted in a trip home for treatment.  The first episode may or may not have been connected.  My suggestion is that the entry is Vomiting of Unknown Origin VUO.  Vomiting of unknown cause can be found in medical literature and vomiting is one symptom of kidney disease.
