Dates of birth were not given on death certificates until later years - I don't know when they started having this information before you ask.  If you try a few years on Ancestry you should be able to work out approximately when  ;D

My mother died in 1970 and her date of birth is shown on the death certificate.  Her mother died in 1961 and no date of birth is shown, just an age in years.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Q2 1969
That's when dates of birth appear in the death indexes.
Because that's when they were included on death certificates (rather than age)

For example:

Eliza Audsley - died Sep 1946 LEEDS

no DOB just "abt 1883"

It means that she was 63 years old when she died.
Look her up on the 1939 Register for date of birth.
Failing that, you could order her birth certificate.

If you look at an actual Death Certificate rather than Ancestry's attempt at simplification, you will see that (before 1969) it includes an "Age at Death".
Nothing at all about Birth Date ;D

Ancestry's "about 1863" is an attempt to provide an approximate year of birth.

But it still depends on who provided the information! ::)

OK so as a rule, DOB's of deceased are only available (at the current time) for the years:

1969-2007

Not for Q1 1969
1 April 1969 is the date of the change.

For death registrations after 2007, not online, you need to visit one of the places on the list in this link
https://www.gov.uk/research-family-history

KGarrad will be surprised to learn that the London Metropolitan Archives is not one of those places.

In fact 2007 deaths are not complete online either. Only for about a quarter of the year on ancestry.
